Sanoma Media Trainee is an 8-month training program for students at the end of their studies or recent graduates interested in developing Finland’s largest digital media products and brands.

This time we are looking for software developers, AI developers, designers, marketeers, business developers, editorial AI specialists and data scientists.
Developer
As a Developer Trainee you will develop the digital services of our media brands to a new level as part of a multi-talented team.
We are looking for Software Developers to develop new functionalities and capabilities to our journalistic products as well as AI Developers for building our own AI capabilties and utilizing forms of generative AI to optimize different journalistic processes.
Designer
As a Designer Trainee you will be part of designing our digital services in a user-centric manner, responsibly with our brand in mind and together with the development team and stakeholders.
We are looking for Designers to build user-friendly functionalities to enhance our news product experience and ad experience in various Sanoma products, to build our design-related capabilities as well as to promote design principles.
Marketeer
As a Marketeer Trainee you will develop and share your knowledge on the development of different marketing and sales processes and technologies.
We are looking for trainees to join our teams working with consumer customers and commercial development. Our teams work with for instance brand marketing, developing multichannel customer journeys, campaigns using marketing technologies, marketing automation and A/B tests across channels. Customer data is in the core of our daily work.
Business Developer
As a Business Developer Trainee you will be part of a team that works with for instance customer and market analysis, portolio and product strategy development and pricing.
We are looking for trainees who have experience and enthusiasm for data collection, business calculations and analysis to support decision-making. We work in collaboration across teams to boost several development endeavours.
Data Scientist
As a Data Scientist Trainee you will work with statistical and ML/AI methods to explore and optimize business processes, develop algorithms and solve problems. Examples include user profiling, improving recommendation systems, forecasting and data analysis.
We are looking for trainees to work with for example the development of personalisation of digital news products and building the next generation of digital advertising products to reach audiences across our media product portfolio.
Editorial AI Specialist
As an Editorial AI Specialist Trainee you will work with both editorial teams and AI development. You will help bringing AI competence to enhance journalistic work as well as building shared AI capabilities across Sanoma.
We are looking for a talent who has some experience and willing to develop their skills in understanding of both editorial and journalistic processes, content production and AI.

What is the application process like for this program?
The application process has two interviews, this is the rough schedule:
- 17th of December 2024 - 6th of January 2025: Application period
- January - beginning of March 2025: Interview process
- Interview 1: Motivation, company fit, working styles
- Interview 2: Technical / substance interview with the hiring team

- Beginning of April 2025: Program start
Suitable candidates are called to interview 1 via our recruitment system TalentAdore. Both interview rounds are eliminative.
What are the language preferences?
Finnish language is not a requirement for all the trainee roles. We will organize the program in English if at least one participant doesn’t speak Finnish. Proficient level of English is mandatory since we have many English speaking experts developing our digital products.
Finnish language is not required for developer & data scientist roles in the 2025 trainee program. The language requirement will be listed also in the actual job application form of each role.
What will I be working with?
Each trainee will be assigned a development team in either news & feature media, B2B unit or journalistic development & consumer business.
News & feature media: Daily content delivery of news & feature content for our news brands such as Helsingin Sanomat, Ilta-Sanomat.
B2B unit: Developing & managing our ad business and experience in all of Sanoma's products as well as optimizing related processes.
Journalistic development & consumer business: Development of our digital news products, brands and consumer management.
Additionally each trainee goes through a personal development plan and a shared training program.

Our goal is to create diverse Finnish media for future generations and to be a diverse, equal and inclusive workplace. We welcome applications from different kinds of people and educational backgrounds. The most important thing is the desire to learn new things.
We use Github extensively for version control and AWS CDK and CloudFormation for infrastructure management. We operate extensively in cloud environments with DevOps principles in both AWS and Azure environments. Our deployments are typically fully automated and we use Github Actions and AWS CodePipeline for CI/CD, and host our apps in AWS cloud using Docker or serverless functions. We use several different testing tools and test automation, thus we choose the tool on a case-by-case basis. In terms of user experience and design, we work with Figma, Supernova and Adobe products. In addition to analytics, we use Cambri -testing tool and various a/b testing methods for measuring experience and data-driven decision-making.
What is Sanoma Media Trainee?
Sanoma Media Trainee is an 8-month training program with a fixed monthly salary. During the program, you will do meaningful and diverse work. Your colleagues include the best people in the industry: creative talents, top experts, praised supervisors and exceptionally nice people.
We expect our trainees to have ambition but we also provide support and experience for the beginning of one's career. We are looking for motivated digital industry workers to develop into experts in the media field at Sanoma with real work projects and products that are important to us. Sanoma Media Trainee -program provides a solid foundation for a career in digital product development. It is a full-day, fixed-term employment of 8 months. There is a possibility for continuing to working with Sanoma after the program. We are also open to support a thesis during the trainee period. The trainee program has an agreed fixed duration of 8 months (April-November) and a salary of EUR 2 800 per month.
We expect applicants to be ready to commit to our organization as an employee as well as be interested in the media industry and product development. Applicants must be able to take the initiative but have good teamwork skills, as all work happens within a team.
Finnish language is considered an advantage but is not a requirement for all the trainee positions. At Sanoma, we can also support the employee's Finnish language development, and we already offer this opportunity to several of our English-speaking employees. The work will be carried out in hybrid-mode, but the applicant must also commit to working at Sanomatalo in Helsinki on a weekly basis and attending some of the ceremonies on-site.
