SanomaWSOY's location-based solution provider, Genimap Oy, is to supply Finnish telecom operator Suomen 2G with a set of Internet-based location information solutions. The agreement covers an Internet-based coverage area map service for consumers and a map-based customer service application for Suomen 2G's internal intranet.
The coverage area map service was launched at the beginning of February when DNA Finland Oy, a provider that uses Suomen 2G's network, launched its mobile phone system for consumers. The Genimap service enables users to access coverage area-related map information on Finland's third national mobile network and see how the network is projected to develop during the course of this year.
"Internet-based location information solutions are one of Genimap's key strengths," says Mikko Salonen, Director, Internet & Mobile Solutions at Genimap. "Telecom operators are one of our major customer segments, and we plan to extend our cooperation with Suomen 2G to cover mobile solutions as well."
Genimap was formed recently following the acquisition by WSOY, one of SanomaWSOY's five sectors, of Karttakeskus Oy in September last year and its merger with WSOY's map company, Geodata Oy. Genimap is the Finnish market leader in customised location information solutions, location-based Internet and mobile applications, and digital and printed map publishing. Genimap has set itself the strategic goal of becoming a leading player internationally in mobile location-based applications. The company had pro forma net sales in 1999 of some FIM 70 million.
Suomen 2G Oy launched a national GPRS-based GSM network at the beginning of February this year. Using the latest technology, 2G operates Finland's most modern mobile network, which is currently used by over 30,000 subscribers.
